Homemade Bath Salts Recipe

Homemade Bath Salts
A Naturally Living Recipe

One of the things I've decided to try making / using that I normally just purchase is Bath Salts.  Essentially, something you can use in a hot bath and just lay in for as long as you like, while all the natural ingredients work on to soften your skin while simultaneously does it's magic and helps your entire body in ways you've never known.

Below is a recipe I've tried several times and just love.  This recipe is a basic recipe, but you can do a lot to 'jazz' it up!  You can get creative and utilize the zest of various citrus fruits which will not only add color but a tad of the fragrance as well!  I've read that some people also add dried flowers to their homemade Bath Salts to add some pizzazz!

While this recipe calls for two types of 'salts' ~ both Epsom and Sea Salts, you can most certainly use all Epsom!  Epsom salt technically aren't even a 'salt'!  Epsom is actually a mineral compund of magnesium and sulfate.  Both which our skin easily absorbs!

Here's my basic Recipe for Homemade Bath Salts:
(Yields approximately 1 1/2 cups)

1 cup Epsom Salt**
1/2 cup Sea Salt
1 tablespoon Baking Soda
1 tablespoon Oil (I use Organic Coconut Oil)
5 - 10 Drops of your favorite Essential Oil

Combine all ingredients into a bowl and stir well.  Pour into a mason jar and seal completely.  For bath purposes ~ use 4 tablespoons in a tub full of hot water!

**Epsom Salt has a number of benefits and I've learned thru reading other blogs, the following information with regard to Epsom Salt and how it helps naturally:

  • Eases stress and relaxes the body
Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They lower blood pressure, create a relaxed feeling, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly.
  • Relieves pain and muscle cramps
An Epsom salt bath is known to ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches. In addition, it has been known to heal cuts and reduce soreness from childbirth. Epsom salt softens skin and will even neutralize foot odor.
  • Helps muscles and nerves function properly
Studies show that Epsom salt can help regulate electrolytes in your body, ensuring proper functioning of the muscles, nerves and enzymes. Magnesium is also known to be critical in the proper use of calcium, which serves as a main conductor of the electric impulses in your body.
  • Helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots
Epsom salt is believed to improve heart health and help prevent heart disease and strokes by improving blood circulation, lowering blood pressure, protecting the elasticity of arteries, preventing blood clots and reducing the risk of sudden heart attack deaths.

  • Makes insulin more effective

Proper magnesium and sulfate levels increase the effectiveness of insulin in the body, helping to lower the risk or severity of diabetes.
  • Relieves constipation
Numerous studies have revealed that Epsom salt can be used to treat constipation. Taken internally, Epson salt acts as a detoxifying agent for colon cleansing. The salt acts like a laxative by increasing water in the intestines and can bring about temporary relief from constipation. However, it is strictly warned that Epsom salts should not be used to relieve constipation without the consultation of a physician.
  • Eliminates toxins from the body
The sulfates in Epsom salt help flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it.

Not only do these make bath time wonderful and relaxing for YOU, but you can make these make wonderful gifts for any woman in your life!  Your mom, sister, best friend, mother in law, etc.

Here are a few images I found from Google Images ~ there are a number of ways you can package these for gifts!

Give this a try and share with us here how it turned out!!  :)

Life's changes

Changes......

We all go thru a period of time in our lives where we decide "Hey, I'm not happy with certain aspects of my life...I'm going to make some changes!"

Well, okay..perhaps not those EXACT words, but something to that effect. I thought I did several years back, and I did make several changes, but nothing to drastic.  Nothing 'out of the norm'.  Nothing that really impacted my life.

I think I'm at that point and time in my life where I'm ready for some REAL changes.
One of the things I'm focusing on is living a more "Naturally based Life".  What does that even mean?!?  Well, for me, I believe it encompasses everything in my life:  my health, my eating habits, the products I use ON my body, the products I use IN my body as well as everything in between!  Of course, these changes aren't going to be something that happens overnight by any means, but baby steps!

So, feel free to join me on my Journey on a Path to Living Naturally!  It's going to be a learning experience for me, but nevertheless, a journey I'm excited to take!
Please share any experiences you've gone thru that has helped you to live a natural based life!
